I’m not good at writing so if you want to skip the following text then you can read tl;dr at the bottom.
Homeschooling can get lonely for some. I’m forced to learn by myself at home so I can understand how it feels. However, I do not regret it since it was my decision after all to start homeschooling because of issues with school (I’m too used to the British curriculum. American curriculum is not for me).
I’ve always thought of how to communicate with people after school if I don’t go out often so I resorted to creating a Discord server. I’ve had some experience making servers so I thought that this one would work and I spent a few weeks developing it.
I study under Wolsey Hall Oxford, a virtual school which sadly doesn’t have an active community platform (It’s newly made forum is quite dead). When I completed the ‘beta’ version of the server, I posted the invite link to the forum and it gained quite a lot of attention. The server was going so well until I got an email from one of the [forum] moderators that stated that they had to delete all of my posts and comments regarding Discord because a person accused the server of spam.
This really pissed me off at first because:
Despite being relatively new at the time, the server had a proper moderation team which took their job seriously (Once, the server got raided while I was gone but the issue got resolved in less than an hour.)
Issues and complaints about the server should have been directed to me or the Admins (Moderators), not the forum mods. To my knowledge, no Wolsey Hall staff joined the server.
After an investigation that lasted weeks, I found out that the person who reported was a lurker (A person who never messaged or set up his/her account properly) and it drove me to a bigger fit of rage. By that time, negotiations with the forum moderators were looking bleak so I gave up. The forum moderators made an announcement in regards to communicating with other students in their own platform, which didn’t really make a difference to its activity.
The server went into hiatus for months with me not knowing what to do next. After a while people stopped talking and the server became dead. I didn’t want to give up a project which I spent weeks on so I decided to make it a public student server instead of making it private.
tl:dr: It’s quiet. Please join. Students only. Teachers are also welcome.
