En 2016, Wanda Maximoff utilise le Darkhold pour empêcher une explosion. Malheureusement, elle perd le contrôle de la magie noire, provoquant une déflagration dévastatrice avec de lourdes pertes humaines. Le livre disparaît. Peu après, les autorités américaines annoncent une régulation des activités super-héroïques, sous l'influence du Darkhold. Des soupçons émergent alors qu'une paix relative s'installe entre héros et vilains. Quelques mois plus tard, une hackeuse divulgue des informations compromettantes sur le gouvernement, révélant des expérimentations inhumaines, manipulations génétiques et contrôles mentaux sur des citoyens.
