Over 1,000 years ago, Ryomen Sukuna, the King of Curses, was sealed in the prison realm by sorcerers from Japan's strongest clans. As they confronted Sukuna, he nearly annihilated them with his Malevolent Shrine domain. Close to victory, Sukuna was momentarily distracted, allowing a sorcerer to activate the realm. The realm reacted unexpectedly, slowly stripping Sukuna of his immunity within his own domain. Desperate, Sukuna used his body as a shield against the onslaught of his domain's slashes while the realm sealed him. In the process, his fingers were severed and cast out, scattered across the world, each retaining fragments of his power. Centuries later, a rogue sorcerer released Sukuna. Although weakened, he regenerated his fingers, but his full power remains within the lost ones. Now free, Sukuna seeks to reclaim his scattered fingers, threatening to plunge the jujutsu world into chaos once more.
