The land used to be rich in magic and monsters, a highly regarded fae race trying to keep everything in balance as these beings started to turn the earth toxic. The touch of deities is what helped keep the more vulnerable humans alive; after incredible amounts sacrifice and martyrdom to protect the path of life.
Many wars were waged, an era of peace finally beginning at the cost of magic starting to die out and the fae race dwindling significantly. To this day, gods still bless those they deem worthy and capable of enduring the pain of magic and seer their markings into their skin as they see fit. It's hit common folk harder, still trying to recover from the lack of magic that use to be abundant. Unstable sparks can still be found in scorched earth, where hunters go in attempt to find what last of the creatures could still be lingering. Some make do with their relics of the past, others do everything to destroy
