FISH OF THE WEEK | Pseudomugil cyanodorsalis

FISH OF THE WEEK | Pseudomugil cyanodorsalis

This little fish is native to northern and western Australia and parts of southern New Guinea. It’s a euryhaline species meaning it can tolerate a wide range of salinities and has been recorded in full marine conditions as well as pure freshwater environments, and commonly inhabits coastal mangrove creeks and swamps. Such changes may occur on a daily or seasonal basis depending on locality, with some habitats influenced by daily tides whereas others become hypersaline during the dry season before being filled with fresh water when the rains return, for example. Aquatic plants aren’t usually present in its habitat, with substrates tending to be composed of silt and mud, but cover in the form of marginal vegetation or tangles of submerged mangrove roots is common. They feed on floating or suspended zooplankton, phytoplankton, and invertebrates in the wild.

These fish do not grow larger than 1.5 inches (4cm) and are sexually dimorphic- the males being more colorful with blue backs and longer paired fins which are used for display, and the females being a duller gray with white undersides. In the aquarium they like to be kept in shoals of 8+ and are somewhat timid fish. Great additions to any peaceful community brackish or saltwater aquarium.

FISH OF THE WEEK | Giant Pacific Octopus

FISH OF THE WEEK | Giant Pacific Octopus

This week we have the Giant Pacific Octopus (Enteroctopus dofleini).

This is the largest recorded species of octopus with the heaviest live animal being 71kg (157lbs). The bigger individuals can have arm spans up to 6m (20ft) long. They inhabit cold waters of the pacific from Mexico, north to Alaska, and along the Asian east coast. Warming sea temperatures have put stress on octopuses, forcing them to retreat deeper in search of colder oxygen-rich water.

They prey on crustaceans, fish, and mollusks including other octopuses. Some have been reported to eat small sharks and even birds. They are preyed upon by marine mammals and sharks. Humans also largely depend on this species for food. Cephalopods in general have short lifespans- this species typically lives for 3-5 years in the wild. As a result these octopuses are extremely prolific and lay between 120,000 and 400,000 eggs. Like many other cephalopods, this species is adept at camouflage and highly intelligent.

AMA: Fish Game Updates & Summer Sale

AMA: Fish Game Updates & Summer Sale

Hello everyone! Just in time for the Steam Summer Sale we're introducing a major update to substrates and a pile of LIMITED TIME SUMMER ASSETS.

We've added a pile of new substrates including several different kinds of gravel, aquarium soil, coated gravel, and glass beads. And if you thought we couldn't make a ridiculous trailer about dirt & rocks, you thought wrong. I'd say how many we're adding, but I am writing this a couple days in advance and there might be a couple more that'll make their way in before the update goes live. At least 19.

Not only are new substrates available, but you can have as many different substrates in a tank as you like and layer them on top of one another. Create sand art, differentiate biomes; tons of possibilities!
